Jest for Pun logoCarpe Diem
An Attempt

Just as Jest in Literature was launched, The Doc took us on an exploration of Carpe Diem poems and we studied Andrew Marvell's - To his Coy Mistress. To check out the poem and The Doc's note visit www.topica.com/lists/lit/read and swim down to the issue titled Jest in Literature - Classical Seduction.

Here's my own little attempt at a Carpe Diem...

Life is much too short to talk of death,
Ponder it's effects, while we still have breath;
What I'd rather talk of is ... when breaths mingle,
Same depth, same rhythm ... as if they were single!
Hearts respond to this perfectly matched beat,
Glow with warmth, ignite a passionate heat,
It's at this point that mostly the mind cries foul,
And spoils the evening with a denying scowl!
Why does it do so, is it averse to bliss?
How did it catch the 'feels good - is wrong' prejudice?
We could sit all night and talk of social pressures,
Fortunately, we don't have to take such measures...
We're both much too smart to let society decide,
Which path do we take, whence do we ride...
So we can focus on the warmth that was glowing,
The surges of energy, the passions that were flowing,
and let the sparks between us set the night alight...
Life, Pleasure, Ecstasy... They're our Birthright!!
