Woody Allen Movies - 1962 to 1985
Datewise :
The Laughmaker (1962) (Writer)
That Was the Week That Was (1964) (Actor)
What's New, Pussycat (1965) (Actor/Writer)
What's Up, Tiger Lily? (1966) (Actor/Director/Writer)
Casino Royale (1967) (Actor)
Main Stars Peter Sellers, David Niven, Ursula Andress. Ian Fleming's first
book was Titled - Casino Royale. This of course is a Peter Seller version. I
haven't seen it yet myself but most reviews I read say that the spoof is
hilarious.

Take the Money and Run (1969) (Actor/Director/Writer)
'A mockumentary that combines sight gags, sketchlike scenes, and standup jokes
at rat-a-tat speed, looks positively primitive compared to his mature work.
Primitive, but awfully funny' is how the Amazon editorial reviewer describes
this movie. Most other reviews seem to agree with this assessment.

Don't Drink the Water (1969) (Writer)
Bananas (1971) (PG13) (Actor/Director/Writer)
In an interview, Woody Allen was asked why he named the movie
"Bananas". His response: "Because there are no bananas in
it. "The film was originally titled "El Weirdo"
Reviewers seem to be up in arms against each other on this one. Either they
love it or they hate it. I'd suggest renting it before you decide whether
you'd like to buy it. ;-)

Play It Again, Sam (1972) (Actor/Writer)
This one should be fun for Casablanca enthusiasts. No it's not a spoof but a
film in which Woody acts as a film critic and CASABLANCA buff.

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (1972) (Actor/Director/Writer)
A movie consisting of several short skits each naughtier than the other. With
lines like -
'TB or not TB, that is congestion' and 'Remember, when you told me if I was in
town, I should look up your wife?' it should definitely tickle the sense of
humor of people who likes Woody's naughty quotes.

Sleeper (1973) (Actor/Director/Writer)
This movie with Woody being cryogenically frozen and then waking up two
hundred years later in a world that has gone frigid was Woody's take on
science fiction. It is said that Woody confirmed the scientific feasibility of
his screenplay ideas in a single lunchtime meeting with Isaac Asimov.

Love and Death (1975) (Actor/Director/Writer)
I was just going through some of the lines from this movie .... I think I need
to add another 2-3 pages of Woody Allen quotes. Here are the lines...
I was walking through the woods, thinking about Christ. If he was a
carpenter,
I wondered what he charged for bookshelves.
Oh don't, Boris, please. Sex without love is an empty experience.
Yes, but as empty experiences go, it's one of the best.
You are the greatest lover I've ever had.
Well, I practice a lot when I'm alone.
Debatably this is one of Woody's most hilarious movies ever.

The Front (1976)(Actor)
Annie Hall (1977) (Oscar, best director) (Oscar nomination, best actor)
(Oscar, best original screenplay)
I'm sure you must have heard about this movie so there's not much point
talking about it. It's supposed to be Woody's best film ever. However I found
these facts about the movie very interesting .... Woody originally envisioned
this movie as a murder mystery, and that's how it was shot, with a subplot
about a romance. During editing, he realized that all the best footage was of
the romance, so he reedited the film as a romantic comedy. Also, his
sneezing into the cocaine was an unscripted accident. When previewed, the
audience laughed so loud that he decided to leave it in, and had to add
footage to compensate for people missing the next few jokes from laughing too
much.

Interiors (1978) (Oscar nomination, best director)
(Oscar nomination, best original screenplay)
Woody gets serious and writes and directs this movie which deals with
depression and suicide. It was nominated for 5 Oscars.

Manhattan (1979) (Actor/Director) (Oscar nomination, best original screenplay)
Another Classic movie. Ranked much higher than Annie Hall by a lot of
people, and the photography is supposed to be exquisite. However Woody himself
disliked his work in this film so much he offered to direct another film for
United Artists for free if they kept "Manhattan" on the shelf for
good. But then Woody in a recent interview said that he felt he should gone
for drama instead of comedy!

Stardust Memories (1980) (Actor/Director/Writer)
Woody has often said that his movies are not autobiographical. In this movie
he plays filmmaker Sandy Bates who has the gift for laughter but no longer
wants to makes comedies. Now you decide if this is autobiographical or not
:-). (BTW - Woody has said many times that, along with Purple Rose of Cairo,
The (1985), this is his favorite of the movies he's made.)

A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy (1982) (Actor/Director/Writer)
This is a takeoff on Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream (what else with a
title like that?) and the musical application of Mendelssohn's "Midsummer
Night's Dream." The movie has wonderful photography and background music
and of course Woody's touch of nuttiness. (This was a much lighter movie,
especially compared to his previous movie)

Zelig (1983) (Actor/Director/Writer)
This film took so long to make that Woody completed A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy,
(1982) and
Broadway Danny Rose (1984), in the time it took to complete this one. Woody
says that that they would
either scrunch the negative up, or stamp on it to give it an old feel. In it Woody
tells the tale of a strange little man who
wanted so badly to fit in that he was able to change like a chameleon to blend
in with his surroundings, whether that meant being a musician in a black band,
a psychiatrist in a mental institution, or a member of the Nazi party.

Broadway Danny Rose (1984) (Oscar nomination, best director) (Actor)
(Oscar nomination, best original screenplay)
I think the bottom line given by a reviewer sums up this movie in which
Woody plays the role of a fast talking yet struggling talent agent
representing a variety of acts that are going nowhere says it all. Bottom
line: if you are looking for pure slapstick, watch Bananas or Sleeper. If you
are looking for a deep, thought-provoking drama, watch Crimes and
Misdeameanors. But if you are looking for a subtle charmer that deals with the
little problems of life in an original, compelling way, watch Broadway Danny
Rose (and Manhattan).

The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) (Director)
(Oscar nomination, best original screenplay)
A freaky movie in which a waitress named Cecilia (Mia Farrow) finds her
relaxation in watching light comedies. She watches The Purple Rose of Cairo so
many times that its main character Tom Baxter (Jeff Daniels) steps off the
screen to woo her. You can imagine the confusion this causes or better still
you can watch it ;-) ! (I forgot to mention, Woody considers this one his
favorite film among all his films.)
