Somerset Maugham

“It’s a funny thing about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it.”

I concur wholeheartedly with this statement. High standards and a refusal to accept mediocrity, in my opinion, can serve as an effective motivation for attaining our objectives. In both our personal and professional lives, it’s critical to push ourselves and pursue excellence in everything we do. We can develop a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment that can be extremely rewarding by holding ourselves to a high standard.

“Death is a very dull, dreary affair, and my advice to you is to have nothing whatsoever to do with it.”

While I enjoy the fun and playfulness of this remark, I don’t necessarily share its sentiment. Death is an inescapable aspect of life, despite the fact that it can be a depressing and difficult subject to think about. I think it’s necessary to face and accept the truth of our mortality rather than trying to evade it. By doing this, we can develop a greater appreciation for the time we have and learn to fully appreciate each moment.

“I can imagine no more comfortable frame of mind for the conduct of life than a humorous resignation.”

This quote is fantastic! I think it may be tremendously helpful to keep a sense of humor and lightheartedness when navigating the ups and downs of life. We can avoid taking ourselves too seriously and find joy and significance even in trying circumstances by confronting obstacles with a sense of humor and an attitude of acceptance.

“The ability to quote is a serviceable substitute for wit.”

Certainly, there is some validity to this statement. It might be beneficial to use quotations to communicate concepts and viewpoints that we would find difficult to express verbally. But I don’t think it can take the place of real wit and originality. Even if quoting can be a beneficial technique, it’s crucial to also cultivate our own distinctive voice and viewpoint.

“I would sooner read a timetable or a catalog than nothing at all.”

This quote applies to me! Finding delight in even the most boring chores or hobbies has merit in my opinion. I strive to find ways to appreciate the simple moments and find pleasure in the simplicity of everyday living, whether it’s reading a catalog or planning my schedule.
